Project Summary

Desmond Rochfort Mural image: old man

National trends suggest that men of 50 and above are increasingly exiting the labour market at an earlier stage than previous generations. At the same time workers are being told that they will have to work longer because of demographic factors and pension requirements. This major ESF funded research project examines the experience of older male workers in the contemporary English labour market. We will be looking a both ‘blue’ and ‘white’ collar workers from the London and Nottingham areas in work as well as the unemployed. In addition the project will explore the responses and strategies adopted by a range of institutions and government agencies in tackling this question.
