Project Summary

Funded by European Social Fund Objective 3, this project aims to improve understanding of recruitment and employment practices within London’s Audio-Visual industry. In particular, it seeks to identify those practices, if any, that may act as barriers to Black & Minority Ethnic (BME) people's entry into this industry and to make recommendations to overcome them. The project involves interviews and surveys with employers, employers associations and trade unions. The findings of our research will be widely disseminated.

Beginning January 2005 and focussing on London, this 2-year project will undertake:

· Questionnaires survey of final year AV or media studies students

· Questionnaire survey of AV workers

· Questionnaire survey of BME members of BECTU

· Face-to-face interviews with AV employers

· Focus group interviews with new graduates looking for or recently found work and with BECTU members

· Analysis of existing labour market trend statistics on the industry in London and broader creative industries sector

An advisory group of student and industry bodies, employers, trade unions and sector skills councils including SERTUC, BECTU, and Skillset support and guide the project and help inform the research team on the significance for policy and practice of the research design.

The project has completed its first phase of development with a questionnaire survey being designed targeting final year students aspiring to work in the AV sector in London after completing their courses. A paper mapping the industry in London has also been produced.
