Comparative Organisation and Equality Research Centre (COERC)

An accredited University research centre, COERC provides a platform for the conduct, dissemination and debate of interdisciplinary research into employment, work organisation and equality and diversity in comparative and international perspective.

The Centre’s activities contribute to knowledge informing private and public dialogue and policy making, enabling organisations, groups and individuals to develop their full potential. This mission is underpinned by a commitment to the symbiotic relationship between sustainable economic advances, personal development and social justice principles.

The Centre has a membership drawn from a wide range of disciplines within the University. It encourages a critical review of business, trade union, employment and management studies in order to explore the implications of an increasingly diverse labour force and markets for government, business, consumers, trade unions, non-governmental organisations and other socio-economic groups in an increasingly integrated global economy.

Core research and consultancy streams include comparative organisation and development in emerging and transforming economies; corporate ethics and governance; cross-cultural management; employment law and public policy; employment relations; equality/diversity and work; gender and entrepreneurship; human capital development; (international); human resource management; organisational structure and culture; and corporate and trade union/social movement strategy and practice.

COERC members are involved in the supervision of full and part-time PhD students. Applications for MPhil/PhD should be made via the Research and Graduate School Office, which then involves COERC in admissions decisions and for supervision.

Located within the Department of Management and Professional Development, COERC is affiliated to the Working Lives Research Institute. The TUC Library Collection and the Women’s Library provide useful assets for research.
