Research findings: Problems at work and South Asian workers in Ealing.

Date:   Monday 19th July
Time:   4pm
Venue: Southall Library, Osterley Park Road, Southall, UB2 4BL

The exhibition will be on for a week starting Monday 19th July 2010.

The exhibition is to present findings of a three-year research project conducted at Working Lives Research Institute.

Researchers from WLRI at London Metropolitan University conducted a three year study to identify support networks available to minority ethnic workers facing problems at work. We were looking at three minority ethnic groups: South Asian workers in Ealing, Kurdish workers in Hackney and  Black Caribbean workers in Lambeth. We were trying to identify the support networks the  workers turned to - for example, work-based communities (managers, colleagues, trade unions), support organisations in the local communities (CABx, law centres etc.) or peoples' social networks of family, friends and their ethnic communities or other kinds of social networks (faith, cultural, political or social groups).

To find out the workers' experiences we did interviews with 185 workers and officers from trade unions, community-based organisations and community centres.

We also collected photographs from the three London boroughs to record events. The main finding of the research is that there is a dearth of free, confidential and timely employment advice for the most vulnerable of workers. At the exhibition we present our main findings, some photographs taken in Ealing and some quotes from the workers we interviewed.

The research team comprised of: Dr Jane Holgate (Principal Investigator), Janroj Keles, Dr Leena  Kumarappan of Working Lives Research Institute, London Metropolitan University and Prof. Anna
Pollert of Bristol Business School, University of the West of England.
