In the summer of 1888, fourteen hundred matchwomen walked out of Bryant & May’s factory in the East End of London, and into the history books. The story of the unexpectedly successful strike of ‘little matchgirls’ against a powerful employer, continues to exert a strong hold on the public imagination. Louise Raw who met and interviewed people who had known the matchwomen, shares her findings about the real matchwomen.
