TUC Library Collections

Trades Union Congress Library Collections

The TUC Library Collections, first established in 1922 for the use of the TUC and its affiliated unions, transferred to the University of North London, now London Metropolitan University, in 1996. They contain books, pamphlets and other material collected from unions, pressure groups and campaign movements both in the UK and internationally since the end of the 19th century. The TUC continues to add material acquired after 1996 on a regular basis. Recent TUC and union publications, including current union journals, are also held.

The Collections also house a number of archive collections including the Workers’ Educational Association Library and Archive, the Labour Research Department Archive, the Marjorie Nicholson papers relating to trade unions in the former colonies and the Gertrude Tuckwell Collection relating to women’s politics 1890-1921.

Thousands of documents and images from the Collections have been digitised and are available on the website The Union Makes Us Strong: TUC History Online at www.unionhistory.info. Other websites created by the TUC Collections are Winning Equal Pay: the value of women’s work and The Workers’ War: Home Front Recalled, which commemorates the role played by workers and unions during the Second World War.

Further information on the Collections and links to related Internet / www resources is available at Trades Union Congress Library Collection.
