Responses to Forced Labour in the EU

A team of researchers from EU eight countries, led by WLRI, have been successful in a bid to the Joseph Rowntree Foundation (JRF) to conduct a six-month study which will focus on national policy and practical responses to forced labour across the European Union.

The research aims to demonstrate to policy makers and practitioners within the UK (and beyond) the possibility of providing more effective support for those facing forced  labour, and how this might  be effectively and efficiently  done.

The team will focus in particular on practice in nine selected countries: France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Netherlands, Poland, Spain and Sweden - the five largest EU labour markets (other than UK), one Baltic, one Nordic and one Benelux state and Ireland. However, to avoid missing important innovative or good practice in other EU member states, a review of existing comparative (written and online) material covering the EU, for example from the ILO, US Dept of State, European Commission and IOM will be conducted.

The project will be led by Nick Clark and Janroj Keles at WLRI, and our partner organizations are:

•    Poland: Weronika Kloc-Nowak, European University Institute
•    Italy: Fabio Perocco, University Ca' Foscari Venice
•    Spain: Xavier Vallvé, Gabinet d'Estudis Socials, Barcelona
•    Latvia: Aija Lulle, University of Latvia
•    Sweden: Christer Thornqvist, Goteborg University & Prof Charles Woolfson, Linkoping University
•    Netherlands: Dr Mijke Houwerzijl  Raboud University, Nijmegen & Dr Connie Rijken Tilburg University
