The Endangered Archives of Sudanese Trade Unions

The project aimed to collect and digitize the endangered archives of Sudanese trade union movement, using the lists we have had compiled during our pilot.

Also it proposed to create a website that will be devoted to the collected materials, with free access to anyone everywhere. A training course, about different aspects of archiving and digitisation, was planned to help trade unionists gain the essential knowledge to archive their documents. Plans were made to donate copies of the collected materials to trade unions and academic institutions in Sudan.

What we have achieved:

(1) We located, collected, copied and digitized the largest collection of Sudanese trade unions documents. No other institution inside or outside Sudan has a similar collection. We have achieved, so far, around 581 GB of
data in 182 folders and around 10,000 digital images in Tiff format ready with checksums and listings. The same collection is saved in three different formats: jpg, raw and tiff.
(2) We organized a successful training course for trade unionists about different aspects of digitization.
(3) We have created a website for the materials we collected.
(4) Our work created awareness among trade unionists and activists about the importance of preserving archival materials for future generation.

Some civil society organisations approached us about their archival materials that were neglected for so long.
