Project summary
The aim of this research was to gather an overview of the economic impact of migrant workers in Mid and West Essex and the objectives of the research included:
- To estimate the overall number of migrant workers in the sub-region by region/country of origin, gender and age group
- To identify trends in occupations/roles migrant workers are filling in different sectors
- To evaluate the impact of migrant workers on the labour market access of residents in relation to different occupations
- To evaluate the impact of migrant workers on wage levels in different occupations/sectors
- To provide some case studies of employers and migrant workers to illustrate their experiences and the trajectories of migration and skills development
Research methods
The project used a mix of quantitative and qualitative methods, including a survey of local GPs, a review of the literature on migrant workers in the region, together with 18 in-depth interviews with key informants, employers and migrant workers.
