Living irregularly in Norway

Outline of the research

The Working Lives Research Institute was appointed by the Norwegian Directorate of Immigration to Chair a steering committee that would be mandated to run the follow-up project to a 2007/08 ‘Qualitative study of unauthorised migrants in Norway’. The study ‘Living irregularly in Norway’ is being conducted by FAFO, a leading Norwegian research institute and involves conducting face-to-face interviews with around 30 undocumented migrants currently living in Norway. The aim is to understand what it means to live irregularly in Norway and draw together information on the needs of Norway’s undocumented migrants, including children and young people.

The WRLI team consists of Sonia McKay and Steve Jefferys.

Sonia is responsible for the overall management of the project research team based in Norway and for the organisation of the Project Steering Group (PSG) meetings, where representatives from the social partners, government and relevant NGOs and community-based organisations are represented. The work began in early 2010 and the first PSG meeting took place on 1 March 2010. With a deadline for completion of the qualitative interviews by the end of June 2010 and a final report before the end of 2010, the PSG will meet on three further occasions during the course of the study.
