Background/Career
In 2001 I completed a doctorate in International Development which focused on the relationships between migration, ethnic identities and collective action in the oldest and most successful indigenous development organisation in Ethiopia. I then went on to explore the role of diaspora and other transnational institutions in promoting development in Africa. I have since focused primarily on researching the experiences of migrant health professionals in the UK working on two projects the Researching equal opportunities for internationally recruited nurses and other healthcare professionals (REOH) project and the Overseas Trained South-Asian Doctors and the Development of Geriatric Medicine (SAG) project. I have also undertaken consultancy work with MEDACT on behalf of the BMA and Save the Children exploring the management and impact of the migration of medical professionals. In addition I also worked at the NHS Centre for Involvement at the University of Warwick exploring public and patient involvement in decision making in the NHS.
