Background/Career

Before moving to the Working Lives Research Institute Tessa worked at the Labour Research Department (LRD), an independent trade union research organisation, for 12 years, moving from the role of IT support and development to become an equality researcher and editor of LRD Booklets. As a researcher covering equality issues Tessa wrote many articles and publications on the discrimination faced by women, ethnic minorities, disabled workers and lesbians and gay men in the labour market and workplace. She also carried out commissioned research for a number of UK trade unions and the TUC, as well as working on European projects on equal opportunities and the participation of women in trade unions.

Research interests

Tessa's work at WLRI has continued to focus on effective measures to combat discrimination at work, including a project funded by the European Social Fund (ESF) and Acas, "The Experience of Ethnic Minority Workers in the Hotel and Catering Industry: Routes to Support and Advice on Workplace Problems", exploring the workplace problems of ethnic minority and migrant workers. She also worked on the ESF project 'Multiple discrimination' and social exclusion at work: lesbian, gay and bisexual workers - an examination of the intersection between gender, race, age and sexual orientation. She also completed a project on the needs and aspirations of seafarers, has worked on a European Framework 6 project ‘Undocumented Worker Transitions’ and is now contributing to a European project on mapping trade union responses to discrimination.

Tessa is working part-time at WLRI while studying for a PhD at the Centre for Research in Equality and Diversity, School of Business and Management, Queen Mary, University of London. She is researching the intersections of gender, sexuality and class in non-traditionally female work, focusing on the transport and construction sectors.
