Background/Career

Chris began his career in local government where he became active in the local government trade union, NALGO, holding lay positions at branch, regional and national level over a period of ten years. In 1992 he took up a position as a full-time regional officer with NALGO, later becoming UNISON’s deputy director of equal opportunities between 1996 and 1999.

He left UNISON to pursue a career in research in 1999. He was a research fellow in the Centre for Equality Research In Business (CERB) between 1999 and 2002, where he worked on two projects concerning race equality policies at work and trade union organising strategies. From 2002 he was a senior research officer within CERB and worked with Fiona Colgan, Adrian McKearney and Tessa Wright on a two year HE ESF funded project concerning lesbian, gay and bisexual workers and employment. During this time he also worked as an independent researcher undertaking research and evaluation for a range of commissioners including Acas, the Employers’ Organisation for Local Government, Save the Children, the Children’s Fund and the Scottish Executive.
