As a student activist in the 1990’s, Max was involved in a number of campaigns, particularly for free education. He was elected to the student union Executive Committee as Academic Affairs Officer the same year he graduated with a 2:1, in 1999. He then returned to London, before going to teach English as a Foreign Language in Lisboa, Portugal. After then visiting Palestine, he decided to study Newspaper Journalism at Lambeth College in 2003-2004.
In 2004, Max went to work in Palestine / Israel as Assistant Editor of News from Within, a monthly, political magazine produced by the Alternative Information Centre. He worked for a year in Palestine before returning to London. He then worked – voluntarily – on the editorial board of Palestine News for over a year, writing and editing articles on activism and Palestine. His writing on Palestine was also published in Red Pepper magazine and Electronic Intifada website, among others.
Max joined WLRI in February 2006 as an Administrator. He is in now the second year of studying for a Masters of Research (MRes) in Labour and Trade Union Studies. Max began a Masters of Research (MRes) in Labour and Trade Union Studies at London Metropolitan University in October 2006, and is due to finish in August 2008. Modules include: Frameworks for Research; Qualitative Research Methods; Survey Design and Data Analysis; and Labour, Race and Empire. His dissertation is an evaluation of British trade union solidarity with Venezuela. His work with other international campaigns as an activist and campaigning journalist reflects an interest in internationalism and activism generally.
