Racism Research Fellow
Sukhwant has over 10 years experience of working for Asian women’s organisations in Britain, most notably at Southall Black Sisters, and particularly on the issue of domestic violence. Her experience in the voluntary sector in Britain has been complemented by an academic career that has involved research on various aspects of racism in Britain. This has included looking at racial harassment in the public housing sector as well as the intersection of race and disability in meeting the needs of Black disabled people.
Sukhwant joined the Working Lives Research Institute in 2004 and is currently working on the Racism and Trade Unions project at the Institute. This is a European comparative study looking at the role of trade unions in tackling racism and xenophobia in five European countries.
Sukhwant is particularly interested in issues around race, gender and religious identity. Over the years, she has explored issues relating to religion and secularism and was awarded a Commonwealth Fellowship in 1996 to pursue this interest at Delhi University in India. Sukhwant is currently a part time Phd student at Goldsmiths College, University of London and is looking at the ways in which religious groups influence the formation of social policy in Britain and the particular impact of this upon ethnic minority women.
